Fade In and Fade Out in Sound Forge: Clean Edges

    Quick answer: select the exact range, then choose Process → Fade → Fade In for a linear rise from −Inf to 0 dB or Fade Out for 0 dB to −Inf. Use Process → Fade → Graphic when the transition needs another curve, an intermediate level, or multiple envelope points. The selection sets the fade length; the curve sets how quickly the level moves inside it. Work on a copy because these commands change the selected audio data.

    A fade can prevent an edge click, preserve a natural release, shape a musical ending, or move room tone into silence. Those are different jobs. The shortest fade that removes a sample discontinuity may be ideal for an edit and completely wrong for a song ending.

    Choose the Fade by Purpose

    Before fading, fix the selection. A curve cannot restore a clipped attack or missing tail. Work on a copy or keep enough source handles to move the boundary.

    Basic Fade In and Fade Out

    1. Zoom to the intended transition.
    2. Select the complete fade duration.
    3. Play from several seconds before the selection through several seconds after it.
    4. Choose Process → Fade → Fade In or Fade Out.
    5. Apply to a copy and audition the full context again.

    The current Sound Forge Pro 2026 Fade documentation states that the basic commands are linear: Fade In moves from −Inf to 0 dB; Fade Out moves from 0 dB to −Inf. If no data is selected, the fade applies to the entire file, so confirm the selection before committing a destructive operation.

    For a WAV, FLAC or MP3 delivery, make the fade in a lossless working file first. Then export the approved master once. Reopening an MP3, fading it and encoding it again adds another lossy generation; the Sound Forge MP3 export guide covers the separate codec and bitrate choices.

    When to Use Graphic Fade

    Choose Process → Fade → Graphic for a custom envelope. The current help allows up to 16 points. Double-click to create a point, drag points to set level, right-click to delete, and right-click an envelope segment to choose its curve. The graph’s maximum-gain range can also be changed when the envelope needs boost as well as attenuation.

    Use extra points only when they describe a real listening decision: hold room tone, duck an interruption, recover after a loud breath, or shape a multi-stage musical ending. More points do not automatically make a smoother fade; they can create bumps and accidental level changes.

    Linear, Fast, Slow, Smooth, Sharp, and Hold

    Sound Forge lists Linear, Fast, Slow, Smooth, Sharp, and Hold segment types. Their names describe envelope behavior, not a guaranteed psychoacoustic result on every source. A fast early rise exposes ambience and sustain sooner; a slow rise protects the opening longer; a smooth S-shaped curve softens both ends; Hold keeps one level until a step-like change.

    The ear does not hear amplitude as a simple straight ruler, so a visually linear envelope may not feel like a steady loudness change. Linear here describes how sample amplitude changes, not a straight line on a decibel scale: half amplitude is about −6.02 dB, not −3 dB. That is why the middle of a long linear fade can seem quieter than its waveform suggests. Use the curve that produces the intended motion in context, and check low-level tails at the actual listening volume.

    Short Fades for Click Prevention

    A click occurs when an edit creates an abrupt sample-value discontinuity. Move the cut to a nearby safe point or zero crossing when possible. Adobe’s current zero-crossing guidance explains the same underlying edit rule: boundaries near zero amplitude reduce the chance of pops or clicks. In stereo, left and right may cross zero at different samples, so a visually clean point in one channel can still click in the other. If the boundary must stay, or no shared safe crossing exists, apply the shortest fade that makes the step inaudible. A long fade changes articulation and weakens attacks without fixing why the edit was bad.

    Test the repair on headphones and speakers, but do not monitor a suspected full-scale click loudly. Compare with the unprocessed boundary at a safe level. A single click exactly at the cut points to the boundary. Repeating clicks inside the audio point elsewhere; a click that happens only when playback starts or stops may belong to the driver or device rather than the file.

    If the click is not confined to the boundary, stop lengthening the fade. Use the click-and-pop repair guide for repeated damage or check DC offset when many edits produce the same low-frequency thump.

    Preserve Attacks and Consonants

    A fade-in that overlaps a drum transient, pick attack, inhale, or unvoiced consonant changes articulation. Start the selection earlier in stable room tone when available, then let the fade reach full gain before the event. If there is no handle, use a curve that restores level quickly without exposing the boundary click.

    Judge a speech edit from the previous sentence through the first complete word. Soloing only the fade can make a damaged consonant seem acceptable because the listener has no rhythmic or linguistic context.

    Musical Fade-Outs

    Choose the musical end before drawing the envelope. Count bars and phrases, identify the last event that must remain intelligible, and listen to vocals, bass, drums, and reverb separately. A curve that suits cymbal decay can make bass disappear too early; a fade that preserves bass may expose vocal breaths.

    Use Graphic Fade to change slope over time: a gentle initial reduction can preserve the arrangement, followed by a steeper final descent once the last phrase resolves. Avoid a late sudden drop caused by choosing a Hold segment unintentionally.

    After approving the fade, measure final delivery level only if required. Don’t normalize after a fade without checking that it raises the intended ending noise and tail. The normalization guide explains the separate level decision.

    Room Tone, Noise, and Silence

    Speech and field recordings often sound more natural when room tone fades smoothly rather than cutting to digital silence. Select a stable ambience bed, avoid obvious moving sounds, and fade after the final breath or release. If the noise floor changes inside the fade, the listener may hear a tonal sweep even when the level curve is smooth.

    Noise reduction before the fade can expose pumping; noise reduction after the fade can react differently as the signal drops. Approve restoration and ambience continuity before finalizing the end, and always compare with the original.

    Fades vs Crossfades

    A fade changes one source toward or away from silence. A crossfade overlaps two sources while one falls and the other rises. Use a crossfade when continuity should pass between clips, room tones, takes, or punch-ins. Use a fade when the destination is silence or full level within one file.

    Fade vs Trim vs Level Change

    Trimming removes time. A fade keeps the selected time but changes its level across that range. A fixed level change raises or lowers the whole selection by one amount. Use Graphic Fade only when level must move over time; do not draw a flat multi-point envelope to solve a simple gain adjustment, and do not fade unwanted silence that should be trimmed away.

    Graphic Fade Workflow for Complex Repairs

    1. Mark the start and end of the problem in context.
    2. Create outer points at unchanged gain.
    3. Add the fewest points needed to reduce or restore level.
    4. Choose curve types segment by segment.
    5. Preview the hardest transition and the surrounding phrase.
    6. Reset and simplify if the envelope creates pumping or bumps.
    7. Apply once from the untouched working copy.

    The current help notes that waveform display in the Graphic Fade graph is unavailable for selections over 300,000 samples. That does not prevent the fade; use the main waveform view, markers, duration readout, and listening context for long selections.

    Final QA

    • Selection starts and ends at the intended musical or editorial points.
    • No attack, consonant, breath, or tail is unintentionally weakened.

    Source-Specific Fade Decisions

    Dialogue and Voice-Over

    Protect unvoiced consonants and breaths that make the edit intelligible. Fade room tone, not the first syllable. At an ending, listen through the final consonant and a natural amount of ambience. If several edits use different background beds, match the tone before shaping level.

    Drums and Percussion

    Transients expose fade mistakes immediately. A fade-in should normally reach full level before the hit unless the attack is intentionally softened. For one-shot samples, preserve the entire release and check that the final fade does not shorten the perceived room or cymbal decay.

    Music Masters

    Judge the ending in bars and phrases. Check whether vocals, bass, percussion, and reverbs appear to vanish in the intended order. A long master fade needs more than two points only when the arrangement calls for distinct stages; automation bumps are more distracting than a simple well-placed curve.

    Ambience and Field Recordings

    Choose a section without passing vehicles, birds, footsteps, or wind changes. A smooth level envelope cannot make a moving event sound stationary. If an obvious event enters during the fade, move the boundary or repair the ambience bed before fading.

    Make Comparisons Repeatable

    Save two or three candidate fades from the same untouched working copy. Keep selection boundaries fixed and change only the curve, or keep the curve fixed and change only duration. Comparing a short linear fade against a long smooth fade changes two variables and does not reveal which decision helped.

    Play each candidate from the same marker several seconds before the transition. Match monitoring level, ignore which envelope looks prettiest, and include low-volume playback. A tail that feels smooth at editing volume can disappear abruptly at normal listening level.

    For a group of similar clips, approve a template on the hardest attack and longest tail before applying it broadly. Then inspect outliers. A preset is a starting geometry, not evidence that every source received a correct boundary.

    Common Fade Mistakes

    • Applying with no selection: the whole file is processed.
    • Using a long fade to hide a bad cut: repair or move the boundary first.
    • Fading through a transient: end the fade before the attack or restore level faster.
    • Cutting a reverb tail: extend the selection and follow the actual decay.
    • Adding many Graphic points: simplify to the few decisions the ear needs.
    • Confusing fade with crossfade: overlap both sources when continuity must pass between them.
