Every guide on this site is written from a real working setup, and this page describes it — what the tests run on, how a guide gets verified before it is published, and what the ratings mean. It exists so you can judge how far my results should transfer to your system.
The test bench
- Machine: self-built desktop — AMD Ryzen 7 7700, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB NVMe SSD, Windows 11 Pro on the current public build. Audio editing is not a heavy GPU workload; this is a deliberately ordinary mid-range PC, closer to what most readers run than to a lab rig.
- Audio interface: RME Babyface Pro FS over USB, using RME's ASIO driver and TotalMix FX for routing. Chosen years ago for one reason this site keeps repeating: on Windows, driver stability is everything, and RME's drivers survive Windows updates that break cheaper interfaces.
- Monitoring: Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro (250 Ω, open-back) for detail and restoration work, ADAM Audio T7V nearfields for level and tone decisions, plus the unglamorous final check on consumer earbuds and a car system.
- Microphone: Shure SM7B, straight into the Babyface preamps — used for the voice-over and recording guides.
- Vinyl chain: Audio-Technica AT-LP120X running line-out into the Babyface. Not an audiophile deck — it is the digitization workhorse behind the vinyl restoration series, captured at 24-bit/96 kHz.
- Software: Sound Forge 2026 (current Boris FX build, installed and updated through Boris FX Hub) as the primary editor. A MAGIX-era Sound Forge Pro 18 Suite install is kept on an older laptop specifically to verify claims about MAGIX-era bundles — when a guide says a feature behaved differently in the MAGIX era, it was checked there, not remembered.
- Third-party plugins: FabFilter Pro-DS, plus the iZotope Elements modules that shipped with the MAGIX-era Suite (on the Pro 18 machine only). Guides always separate what is built into Sound Forge from what came from a bundle.
How a guide gets tested
- Menu paths are re-walked, not recalled. Before publication, every menu path and dialog name in a guide is verified on the current Sound Forge build. When Boris FX ships a release that moves things, affected guides are updated with a dated note.
- Settings are applied to real material. Recommended values — gate thresholds, DeClicker sensitivities, EQ moves, LUFS targets — come from applying them to actual files: voice-over takes, vinyl captures, finished mixes. Where a guide quotes a number, that number was used, not simulated.
- Results are verified with Statistics. Loudness and level claims are checked with Sound Forge's own Tools → Statistics pass (integrated LUFS, true peak, RMS), the same verification workflow the mastering guides teach.
- Era claims are tested on era software. Anything labeled "MAGIX-era" was verified on the Pro 18 Suite install, and anything about the current product was verified on the current Boris FX build.
- Failures stay in the text. When a tool performs badly — a filter that smears transients, a wizard that suggests the wrong move — the guide says so. Limitations sections are part of the test, not an afterthought.
What the rating means
The review's 4.2/5 is a judgment call across six areas, weighed against price and against the alternatives covered on this site: editing speed and precision, restoration quality, the mastering chain, stability on Windows 11, value against current pricing, and platform limitations. It is not an average of hidden sub-scores, and it gets re-examined at every major version change — the score belongs to a specific build and year, which is why the review is dated.

Honest limitations
This is one listening room, one pair of ears, and a Windows-only bench. There is no anechoic chamber and no blind panel. What this site can honestly offer is a consistent setup, repeatable steps, and verification numbers you can reproduce on your own files — not laboratory certainty.
