Play the track, tap once on every beat and read the estimate. Two taps produce the first number; four to eight steady taps usually make it settle. Use the large pad, the Space bar or the T key. The page measures your timing; it doesn't listen to the music.

## How to get a stable tap-tempo reading

1. **Choose one pulse and stay with it.** Follow the kick, snare, conductor or foot-tapping beat you can repeat most consistently. Do not switch from quarter notes to eighth notes halfway through.
2. **Tap once per beat.** Click the pad or press Space/T. The first tap starts the clock; each later tap adds one measured interval.
3. **Keep going for four to eight taps.** A two-tap result rests on one interval. Several steady intervals reduce the influence of one slightly early or late press.
4. **Check Tap stability.** “Steady” means your recent intervals are close to one another. It does not prove that you chose the song's intended counting level.
5. **Use Half-time or Double-time only when the feel calls for it.** The buttons reinterpret the same taps; they do not remeasure the audio.

A long pause starts a fresh sequence automatically. The reset threshold adapts to the recent beat interval, with a minimum of three seconds, so a genuinely slow pulse is less likely to be mistaken for a break.

## Why the same beat can look half or double

Tempo depends on which recurring pulse you call “the beat.” You might count a relaxed kick pattern at 75 BPM while a DJ library describes the same passage at 150 BPM because it follows a faster subdivision. Neither display changes the audio. They describe two counting levels with a 2:1 relationship.

Start with the pulse you'd naturally nod or tap your foot to. If the result looks twice as high or half as high as the project, score or track listing you need to match, try the interpretation controls and listen again. Don't use a familiar genre range as proof: tracks can sit outside conventions, and arrangements can change feel without changing their underlying grid.

## How this BPM counter calculates the estimate

Each press receives a browser timestamp from [performance.now()](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Performance/now). The browser reports that clock in milliseconds and keeps it monotonic, so ordinary system-clock adjustments do not make a tap interval run backward. If the average retained interval is 500 milliseconds, the calculation is 60,000 ÷ 500 = 120 BPM.

The tool keeps the eight most recent intervals. Once there are enough taps, it compares intervals with their median and leaves out a clearly isolated timing miss before averaging. It shows when that happens rather than silently presenting the number as perfect. The stability label is based on the variation among the intervals used for the estimate.

This is the same basic interaction used by production software: Ableton's [Tap Tempo documentation](https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/audio-clips-tempo-and-warping/) tells users to press once per beat and notes that more consecutive taps improve its conclusion. Our browser tool doesn't control a DAW session or start playback; it only returns the tap-derived number.

## What tap tempo can and cannot tell you

Tap tempo works best when the music has a steady pulse you can follow. It becomes less representative during rubato, accelerando, ritardando, tempo changes, free-time introductions and polyrhythmic passages. In those cases, one average may describe your tapping without describing any single tempo in the performance.

The page also can't correct a consistently wrong subdivision. Eight perfectly even taps on every second beat will be stable, yet they'll return half the faster counting rate. Stability is a quality check on your input, not a truth certificate.

No microphone or file is involved. If you need software to inspect an actual recording automatically, that's a different job from this tap BPM counter. ### How does tap tempo calculate BPM?

The page measures the milliseconds between your taps, averages the recent usable intervals and divides 60,000 by that interval. A 500 ms interval equals 120 BPM. It measures your presses, not the audio itself.

### How many times should I tap?

Two taps give the first estimate because they create one interval. Four to eight steady taps usually produce a more stable recent average. More taps do not help if you change subdivisions or drift away from the beat.

### Why is the result half or double the BPM I expected?

You probably counted a slower or faster level of the same pulse. Use Half-time or Double-time to reinterpret the number, then confirm which counting level matches your score, project grid or musical purpose.

### Does the page listen to or upload my song?

No. It does not request microphone access or read an audio file. The calculation uses only the timing of button clicks or key presses in the current page.

### Why did the tap sequence reset?

A long pause indicates that you stopped tapping or changed sections, so the next press starts a fresh estimate instead of inheriting stale intervals. The sequence is also cleared when the page becomes hidden.
