**If Sound Forge will not open, do not reinstall it yet.** Watch one launch from the icon to the workspace and write down the last visible stage. If nothing appears at all, suspect the shortcut, license assignment or install. A stop on a named VST points toward that plug-in, and a crash while audio initializes points toward the selected device or driver. If the workspace opens and one WAV triggers the crash, the file is the better lead.

The useful order is: capture the Windows failure record, separate current Boris FX login licensing from legacy activation, try a new file and a known-good WAV, isolate plug-ins, test Windows audio, then use a clean boot. Reinstall after those checks. Change one variable per launch and record the result, because a successful launch is evidence only when you know what changed.

*Scope: current Sound Forge 2026 on Windows 11, plus clearly marked Sony/MAGIX-era remedies for an older version. This page belongs to the* [Sound Forge troubleshooting hub](https://soundforgepro.com/tag/troubleshooting/)*. Last fact-checked September 4, 2026.*

## Start with the stage where Sound Forge stops

| What happens | Best first check | Do not start with |
| ------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| Nothing appears after clicking the icon | Failure record, Hub assignment, or exact legacy activation path | Audio buffer changes |
| An older build activated, then stopped launching | Confirm its version before using the official legacy registry remedy | Applying that remedy to Sound Forge 2026 |
| Splash screen stops on a plug-in name | Temporarily isolate that VST | Reinstalling the editor |
| Splash screen stops while audio initializes | Disconnect the interface and test Windows audio | Removing every plug-in |
| Workspace opens, but one file crashes it | File > New, then a known-good WAV | Resetting Windows |
| It opens only in a clean boot | Re-enable services and startup apps in halves | Leaving Windows in clean boot |

The last completed startup stage determines the next useful test. Change one layer and launch again.

## Fix 1: read the Windows crash record

Press Windows+R, type **perfmon /rel**, and press Enter. Microsoft documents [the /rel switch](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/perfmon) as the route to Reliability Monitor. Find the failure at the matching time, open its technical details and save the application version, problem event name, faulting module and exception code when those fields are present.

Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer are different tools. Reliability Monitor is the faster timeline, and it's usually where I look first. Event Viewer can provide a second record: search for Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application, then match the time and application name. Event 1000 details may contain a faulting module and exception code, but Windows doesn't record every failure in the same form.

Treat a module name as a lead. A plug-in vendor DLL is a reason to isolate that plug-in; an interface or ASIO DLL is a reason to test the driver. A shared Windows module such as ntdll.dll or KERNELBASE.dll can be where the failure surfaces even when another component triggered it. An AppHang event means the process stopped responding; it doesn't say whether the wait occurred in licensing, VST scanning or device initialization.

![Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer evidence compared for a Sound Forge startup crash](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/08/evidence-desktop.webp)

Reliability Monitor provides the timeline; Event Viewer may provide Event 1000 details. A named module is a lead, not proof.

## Fix 2: keep the legacy registry remedy narrow

Boris FX publishes a current support article for an older Sound Forge post-activation failure. Its path runs through HKEY\_USERS, the current user SID, VirtualStore, Wow6432Node, Sony Creative Software, Sound Forge, and the exact version key. That Sony branch makes this a legacy remedy, not a general Sound Forge 2026 crash fix.

If the exact older version and symptom match the [official post-activation article](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/43612367340813-Sound-Forge-does-not-launch-after-activating), back up the version key before deletion. In Registry Editor, select the exact Sound Forge version key, choose File > Export, select Selected branch, and save the .reg file somewhere outside a temporary folder. Boris instructs deleting the version key only. Do not delete Sound Forge, Sony Creative Software, Wow6432Node, VirtualStore or any parent branch.

If the result is worse, close Sound Forge and use File > Import in Registry Editor to restore the saved .reg file, or stop and send the backup path to Boris FX support. Do not import a registry file from another PC or version. If the current 2026 release merely shows a generic crash, skip this registry route and continue with licensing, file, VST and audio isolation.

## Fix 3: separate current Hub licensing from legacy serials

Current Sound Forge uses Boris FX login licensing. Open Boris FX Hub, sign into the account used for the purchase, locate the correct edition, and confirm that Use on This Computer is active. [Boris FX licensing guidance](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44687772090253-How-does-licensing-work-for-Vegas-Pro-and-Sound-Forge) separates signing in from assigning the login license to the computer. Preserve that state while testing the other layers.

Sony- and MAGIX-era releases use their original serial and account systems. Pasting an old serial into current Hub and reading the rejection as a damaged installation only muddies the diagnosis. If the product is missing from Hub, verify the purchase account and edition first. The [Sound Forge activation guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-activation-failed/) covers current sign-in, device assignment and legacy paths without mixing them.

## Fix 4: test a new file before touching plug-ins

A file-specific failure can look like an application failure when the crash follows a file double-click or happens as soon as a document opens. Make the file test explicit: 1) start Sound Forge from its own icon with no source file; 2) choose File > New and confirm an empty data window remains open; 3) open a short known-good PCM WAV from a trusted local folder; 4) open a copy of the problem file last.

If the empty window and known-good WAV work, the editor, license and basic audio path have started successfully. Preserve the original problem file and check whether a second trusted player or editor can read the copy. If every file crashes, return to the startup-stage route. Boris FX's [current crash checklist](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44322512184717-The-application-crashes-on-startup-or-during-use-What-should-I-try) also uses an empty project to separate project-specific failure from driver or system failure.

## Fix 5: isolate a VST or audio device one layer at a time

If the splash screen stops while a plug-in name is visible, update that plug-in from its developer or move that single file out of the configured VST folder temporarily. If no name is visible, rename the third-party VST folder, launch Sound Forge, then restore plug-ins in small batches until the failure returns. A [MAGIX community startup case](https://www.magix.info/us/forum/sound-forge-is-crashing-at-boot-up--1265445/) describes the same batch method; treat it as directional evidence, not a Boris FX guarantee.

Do not delete the plug-in library, and leave undocumented Vegas launch switches alone. Once Sound Forge opens, check its VST paths and disabled plug-ins in Preferences. If the editor opens but effects are absent, use the [missing VST plug-in guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-vst-plugins-not-showing/); that's an indexing problem rather than a startup crash.

If startup reaches audio initialization, close Sound Forge, disconnect the external interface and launch through the built-in Windows audio path. If it opens, close the application before reconnecting the interface, install the current manufacturer driver and retest. When the program opens far enough, check Options > Preferences > Audio or Audio Device. [Boris FX device guidance](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/43404080018701-Why-can-t-my-device-be-initialized-for-playback) says Windows must see the device and the correct device must be selected there.

Microsoft Sound Mapper is a simple Windows-path test; the manufacturer's ASIO driver remains the normal choice for low-latency interface work after the fault is isolated. If Sound Forge opens but playback is silent, follow the [no-sound signal-path guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-no-sound/). If recording alone fails, use the [recording and ASIO input guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-not-recording-audio/).

![Reversible Sound Forge tests for licensing, a known-good WAV, VST plug-ins and audio hardware](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/08/isolation-desktop.webp)

Keep the license state fixed, test a known-good file, then isolate plug-ins and the audio interface one layer at a time.

## Fix 6: verify Windows, storage and runtime evidence

The [current standalone requirements](https://www.soundforge.com/sound-forge/system-requirements/) list Windows 11, a 1.4 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM with 8 GB recommended, 1,100 MB for Sound Forge and 1,400 MB for Sound Forge Plus. Those figures describe the current release. Check the installed version in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then use the [version-by-version Sound Forge requirements guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-system-requirements/) before choosing an installer for an older Pro release.

Install pending Windows and device-driver updates, restart, then reproduce the same launch once. If the record or dialog names a missing msvcr, mfc or related runtime DLL, do not download that DLL by itself. The [Boris FX runtime article](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/38965409631629-What-can-I-do-if-an-error-message-regarding-missing-msvcrxxx-dll-mfcxxx-dll-or-dsp-dll-appears) sits in the Samplitude and Music Studio support corpus, so use it only when the exact DLL family matches and support confirms the route for the installed Sound Forge build.

Microsoft's [supported Visual C++ Redistributable page](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170) explains that package architecture must match the application and that older 2013-and-earlier packages remain side by side. It also tells app users to contact the vendor for the required runtime. Don't assume the newest v14 x64 installer fixes every msvcr or mfc message; record the missing filename and ask Boris FX which package and architecture the installed build requires.

## Fix 7: use a clean boot to expose a background conflict

A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so another service or app can be tested as the blocker. Microsoft's [clean-boot procedure](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Experience/Startup-Boot/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows) applies to Windows 10 and 11\. Sign in as an administrator, search for msconfig, open System Configuration, and keep a screenshot or written list of every item changed.

1. On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services before choosing Disable all and Apply.
2. On Startup, open Task Manager and disable the currently enabled startup apps.
3. Restart Windows and launch Sound Forge once with the same file and hardware state.
4. If it opens, re-enable services and startup apps in halves, restarting between tests, until the conflict returns.
5. When testing is complete, select Normal Startup and re-enable the startup items you intentionally keep.

If Sound Forge still crashes in the clean-boot environment, the disabled background items are less likely to be the cause. That result doesn't prove Windows or Sound Forge is defective; it narrows the next support request. A clean boot can temporarily remove audio control panels, cloud sync and updater services, so treat it as a diagnostic state; it isn't a permanent performance setting.

![Clean boot decision tree for testing a Sound Forge background software conflict](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/08/cleanboot-desktop.webp)

A clean boot is temporary evidence: restore Normal Startup after the test and keep the failure details.

## Fix 8: reinstall from the correct source

Back up custom presets and write down plug-in search paths first. For the current release, uninstall Sound Forge through Windows, restart, then follow the [current Boris FX Hub installation route](https://soundforgepro.com/how-to-install-sound-forge-pro/). For a Sony- or MAGIX-era release, use the original account and installer for that exact version. A current installer cannot validate a legacy serial.

Skip registry cleaners, trial-reset tools and loose DLL downloads. They can remove shared components without showing whether the original fault was licensing, a plug-in or an audio driver. Reinstalling also leaves most third-party VST files outside the Sound Forge program folder, so the same failing plug-in can be discovered again on the next scan.

If the clean reinstall fails, collect the Sound Forge version, Windows build, hardware summary, exact reproduction steps, failure time, Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer details, and whether the issue began after a change. Submit that evidence through [Boris FX support](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/10370509834893-How-do-I-contact-technical-support). A short screen recording helps when the splash screen exposes the last loaded component.

## The safe Sound Forge startup fix order

Use these eight stages in order. The text is also the visible HowTo sequence used by this page's structured data.

1. Record the last visible startup stage and reproduce the failure once without changing anything.
2. Open Reliability Monitor with perfmon /rel, then match Event Viewer by time if more detail is needed.
3. Confirm current Hub assignment or the exact legacy activation path without mixing licensing generations.
4. Choose File > New, open a known-good WAV, and test the problem file last.
5. Isolate the named VST or restore third-party plug-ins in small batches.
6. Disconnect the audio interface, test Windows audio, then reinstall the manufacturer driver if implicated.
7. Use a temporary clean boot and re-enable services or startup apps in halves when Sound Forge opens.
8. Reinstall from the correct current or legacy source, then send the evidence package to Boris FX if it still fails.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why does Sound Forge freeze on the splash screen?

The last visible item is the best lead. A displayed plug-in name points toward VST scanning; a stop during audio initialization points toward the device or driver. Record the stage, change one layer and launch again.

### What does AppHangB1 mean for Sound Forge?

It means Windows recorded an application that stopped responding. It does not identify the root cause. Match the time in Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer and combine that evidence with the last visible startup stage.

### Should I run Sound Forge as administrator?

Do not use administrator mode as a permanent generic fix. If an older Sony- or MAGIX-era build launches only as administrator after activation, confirm its exact version before using the narrow Boris FX VirtualStore remedy or contact support.

### Can a VST plug-in stop Sound Forge from opening?

Yes. Isolate the named plug-in first. When no name is visible, move third-party VSTs out temporarily and restore them in batches until the failure returns. Do not delete the library.

### Why does Sound Forge crash when my audio interface is connected?

The interface driver or saved device selection is the strongest lead. Close Sound Forge, disconnect the interface, test Windows audio, then install the current manufacturer driver and reselect the correct device.

### Does current Sound Forge support Windows 10?

The current standalone Sound Forge requirements list Windows 11\. Older Sound Forge Pro releases have different support ranges, so match the operating-system requirement to the installed version.

### Will reinstalling Sound Forge remove a bad VST?

Usually no. Third-party plug-ins commonly live outside the Sound Forge program folder and can be scanned again after reinstall. Isolate the named plug-in or folder before reinstalling the editor.

### What should I send Boris FX support?

Send the product edition and version, Windows build, hardware summary, exact reproduction steps, failure time, whether the issue is a regression, and the matching crash details or screen recording.
