**Adobe Audition is the editor; iZotope RX is the repair suite you add when Audition's own effects stop being enough. If you record, edit and mix podcasts or Premiere Pro dialogue, start with Audition, which cost US$22.99 a month on the US annual plan billed monthly on October 20, 2026\. Add RX 12 Standard, $399 on the US iZotope store the same day, when noise sits inside the words, when one sound has to come out of the middle of a sentence, or when you want RX Connect's round trip into a spectral repair editor. RX 12 Elements, at $99, adds six repair plug-ins to Audition but no editor and no RX Connect.**

I would not frame this as one or the other. Audition holds the session: the multitrack, the loudness pass, the Premiere round trip. RX is where a damaged clip goes for surgery before it comes back. If your recordings are clean and your problems are steady hiss, hum or the odd click, Audition's built-in effects will carry you, and I would keep the $399\. If you keep fighting noise that lives inside the speech, most of the published comparisons below point the same way, and RX 12 Standard is the edition I would buy first.

## Audition is an editor, RX is a repair suite

Adobe describes [Audition as a multitrack, waveform and spectral toolset](https://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) for creating, mixing, editing and restoring audio. Restoration is one job among several. The current release is version 26.5 from September 2026, and [since version 26.0 Audition runs natively on Windows on ARM](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/desktop/using/whats-new/2026.html), according to Adobe.

RX 12 is built the other way round. Each module targets one problem, such as hum, clicks, clipping, reverb or a voice buried in noise. The [RX 12 overview in iZotope's manual](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/rx-overview.html) splits it into three editions. Elements is six plug-ins with no standalone editor. Standard and Advanced add the RX Audio Editor, with spectral editing tools, a Batch Processor, Module Chain, plug-in hosting and the new Stem Split pane. RX 12.0.0 shipped on April 28, 2026, and the 12.1.0 maintenance update of October 15, 2026 adds Boris FX license activation and new branding, per the [RX Standard release notes](https://www.izotope.com/pages/release-notes/rx-standard), which also list Audition 2026 and Premiere Pro 2026 as supported hosts.

If you are choosing the editor rather than the repair tool, the [Sound Forge Pro vs Adobe Audition comparison](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-vs-adobe-audition/) covers that decision, and [Sound Forge Pro vs iZotope RX](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-vs-izotope-rx/) covers the other pairing. Everything else about RX lives on the [iZotope RX hub](https://soundforgepro.com/izotope-rx/).

## Repair jobs side by side

Audition covers more repair jobs than its reputation suggests. Next to the classic noise-print Noise Reduction, its Noise Reduction/Restoration menu holds DeHummer, DeReverb, DeNoise, Sound Remover, Automatic Click Remover and Click/Pop Eliminator, as [Adobe's noise reduction and restoration guide](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/noise-reduction-restoration-effects.html) lists. The difference is depth. RX gives each problem its own module, and Standard adds an editor built around the spectrogram.

| One cough, bump or ring | Spot Healing Brush (up to 4 seconds), Sound Remover | Spectral Repair in the Audio Editor | Standard |
| Matching room tone or speech inflection | Not among Adobe's documented restoration effects | Ambience Match, Dialogue Contour | Advanced, through RX Connect |

Four details from Adobe's documentation decide how far Audition gets on its own. First, Noise Reduction is a process effect: it works only in the Waveform Editor and cannot sit in the Effects Rack, so you apply it as a one-off render, as the [Waveform Editor effects guide](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/applying-effects-waveform-editor.html) explains. Adobe calls FFT sizes of 4096 to 8192 good settings for it. Second, Adaptive Noise Reduction runs in real time, so it can live in the Effects Rack and in Multitrack, where [Audition allows up to 16 effects per clip, track and bus](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/applying-effects-multitrack-editor.html). Third, to keep level after declipping, [Adobe's DeClipper instructions](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/diagnostics-effects-waveform-editor-only.html) suggest running it at Gain 0 and then applying Hard Limiting with Boost 0 and Limit -0.2 dB. Fourth, spectral fixes are short: [the Spot Healing Brush is limited to selections of four seconds or less](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/selecting-audio.html), with the Marquee, Lasso and Paintbrush tools for other spectral selections.

For quick dialogue work, the [Essential Sound panel](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/essential-sound-panel.html) bundles Reduce Noise, Reduce Rumble below 80 Hz, DeHum and DeEss into the Repair section of its Dialogue tab, and its Loudness Auto Match brings clips to a common level in LUFS. The [podcast loudness standard guide](https://soundforgepro.com/podcast-loudness-standard/) lists the targets to aim for after that.

RX's answer to a buried voice is Dialogue Isolate. The [Dialogue Isolate guide](https://soundforgepro.com/izotope-rx-dialogue-isolate/) covers its settings, and [removing background noise with iZotope RX](https://soundforgepro.com/remove-background-noise-izotope-rx/) walks through the wider noise workflow. For echo on its own, see [how to remove echo without wrecking speech](https://soundforgepro.com/remove-echo-from-audio/).

## Test results: what published comparisons found

Five published comparisons, from a forum thread that began in 2009 to a shootout from May 2026, point to one pattern. RX matched or beat Audition once noise sat inside the speech in three of the five. Audition handled simpler noise well in two. Two named Audition the better home for multitrack, podcast and Premiere work. The caveat is age: four of the five compare RX with Audition directly, but they cover the first RX releases through RX 6 and Audition 3 through Audition CC, and the one 2026 test sets RX 12 against Adobe's Enhance Speech, which is not part of Audition. None of the comparisons I could find runs RX 12 and Audition 26.5 on the same files, and none reports a repeatable score, so the table counts verdicts, with the version next to each.

The only hard number comes from [Jan Ozer's 2013 declipping comparison for Streaming Media](https://www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=92211), which set RX 3 against Audition CC and CS6\. Every program removed the clipping distortion. Ozer found iZotope easier to use, with slightly greater dynamic range, while Audition's Restore Heavily Clipped preset cut gain by 12 dB. He was least confident about that test because the file was synthetic, and the gain loss is what Adobe's current Gain 0 plus Hard Limiting advice addresses. On spot repair he was clearer: he got much better results, faster, with RX's [Spectral Repair](https://soundforgepro.com/izotope-rx-spectral-repair/) than with Audition's Auto Heal. He also found Audition CC ahead of Audition CS6.

In [Part 2 of the Streaming Media series](https://www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/Editorial/Featured-Articles/iZotope-RX-3-vs.-Adobe-Audition-Part-2-Noise-and-Reverb-Echo-Reduction-92572.aspx), from October 14, 2013, both tools were fine when noise was the only thing on the waveform. When noise was mixed into the speech itself, RX 3 removed it noticeably better. Ozer called himself competent with Audition's noise reduction but not an expert, and would not say iZotope is absolutely better, only that it reached a superior result faster and more easily. On reverb, Audition's Channel Extraction did a credible job, while the RX 3 Advanced Dereverb removed virtually all of it, with some tonal change. Today's Audition has a dedicated DeReverb effect, so that result has aged most. His split is still the one I would use: Audition for compression and multitrack editing, RX for clicks, background noise and reverb, with Dynamic Link making Audition the easier fit for Premiere Pro users.

Four years later, a [Creative COW user comparing RX 6 Advanced with Audition](https://creativecow.net/forums/thread/audition-vs-izotope-interesting-findings-on-noise/) found the RX dialogue filters at least as good as Audition or slightly better, and found Audition worked well only at certain FFT sizes, such as 4096\. On one location file with traffic, broadband noise and wind, the cleanest result came from running Dialogue Isolate on a low setting, then Voice De-noise, then De-wind, which then worked ten times better in their words. That is one user with no replies, and De-wind is Advanced-only in RX 12.

The oldest evidence, a [KVR thread on RX versus Audition](https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251761) from 2009 to 2011, adds forum opinion from the Audition 3 era. Several users preferred RX for detailed noise removal, and one heard more artifacts from Audition 3 on 24-bit, 96 kHz audio. Another recommended Audition to anyone who needs a full multitrack editor with podcast and voice-over tools such as ducking, and the thread also calls early RX fussy with low-resolution audio and not a full editor.

The newest test does not include Audition. In [ProVideo Coalition's RX 12 shootout](https://www.provideocoalition.com/izotope-rx-12-shootout/), RX 12 Dialogue Isolate won the steady-noise test, and Adobe's online Enhance Speech won the phone-with-reverb and heavy-traffic tests, two of the three dialogue rounds. A fourth round, stem splitting, set RX 12 against UVR rather than Adobe, and RX won it. The reviewer noted that Enhance Speech changed the voice a bit while RX stayed truer to the original, found Enhance Speech inside Premiere Pro very patchy next to the online version, and concluded that no single tool wins every test. Enhance Speech is not part of Audition: a [request to add Enhance Speech to Audition](https://community.adobe.com/feature-requests-545/audition-and-enhance-speech-1436173) has been open for voting since July 29, 2023.

My verdict: Audition is enough when the noise is steady and separate from the voice, and its noise print, DeHummer and click removers will take you a long way. RX earns its price when the noise sits inside the words, when one sound has to leave the middle of a sentence, and when several problems stack on one file. The tests are old, so I weigh the direction of the findings rather than their margins, and that direction has held from early RX to RX 12\. If Adobe's AI cleanup is what tempts you, remember it lives outside Audition.

## Using RX inside Audition: RX Connect and plug-ins

You do not have to pick one. RX plug-ins load from Audition's effects menu like any other VST3 effect, and RX Connect sends a selection to the RX 12 Audio Editor and back. The round trip, from [iZotope's guide to RX Connect in Audition](https://support.izotope.com/hc/en-us/articles/47669813860237-How-to-use-RX-Connect-in-Adobe-Audition):

1. In Audition's Waveform view, select the audio you want to repair.
2. Choose Effects > VST3 > Restoration > iZotope, load RX 12 Connect and click Apply. RX 12 opens with your selection.
3. Repair the audio in RX with any module or the spectral tools.
4. Click Send Back at the top of the RX window. Audition shows Waiting for Connect.
5. Load RX 12 Connect again. It now reads Press Apply to commit changes. Click Apply.

![Six-step RX Connect round trip: in Adobe Audition, select audio in Waveform view and load RX 12 Connect, click Apply; in the RX 12 Audio Editor, repair the audio and click Send Back; back in Audition, load RX 12 Connect again and click Apply to commit. Badges note VST3 only in Audition and RX Standard or Advanced](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/10/rx-connect-audition-round-trip.webp)

The round trip leaves Audition twice and needs the VST3 version of RX 12 Connect from RX Standard or Advanced.

The [RX Connect chapter of the RX 12 manual](https://docs.izotope.com/rx12/en/rx-connect.html) describes two modes. Send For Repair returns the processed audio; Send For Reference only imports clips for analysis and cannot send anything back. If you might revisit a fix, save an .rxdoc in RX, which keeps every adjustment editable.

Two rules trip people up. RX Connect ships only with RX Standard and Advanced, and in Audition it works only as a VST3 plug-in; the AU version does not, according to iZotope's Audition setup notes. If Connect does not appear, open Audition's Audio Plug-in Manager and run Scan for Plug-ins. [Audition hosts VST3 and VST plug-ins](https://helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/adding-third-party-plug-ins.html) on both platforms and Audio Units on macOS. The [fix for RX plug-ins not showing](https://soundforgepro.com/izotope-rx-plugins-not-showing/) covers the remaining causes.

Some Advanced modules never appear as plug-ins in Audition. Ambience Match, De-rustle and Scene Rebalance exist as plug-ins only in AAX AudioSuite format, which Audition does not host, and De-wind and Dialogue Contour are not plug-ins at all. In Audition you reach all five through RX Connect and the Advanced Audio Editor.

Premiere Pro works differently. iZotope's [RX Connect FAQ](https://support.izotope.com/hc/en-us/articles/47669779599629-RX-Connect-FAQ) lists it among hosts that use RX as an external editor: right-click the clip, choose Reveal in Finder or Reveal in Explorer, open the file in the RX 12 Audio Editor, repair it, then choose File > Overwrite Original File. That last step replaces the media on disk, so I would duplicate the file first. If Audition is installed, Edit Clip In Adobe Audition sends the clip to Audition instead, and the Connect round trip above applies.

## Price, editions and trials

These are US prices observed on October 20, 2026\. The iZotope store showed no sale that day, and Adobe's price is for its annual plan billed monthly.

The RX figures come from the [RX 12 Elements](https://www.izotope.com/products/rx-elements), [RX 12 Standard](https://www.izotope.com/products/rx-standard) and [RX 12 Advanced](https://www.izotope.com/products/rx-advanced) store pages and the [iZotope subscriptions page](https://www.izotope.com/pages/subscriptions); the Audition figure comes from [Adobe's Audition free trial page](https://www.adobe.com/products/audition/free-trial-download.html). A year of Audition on that plan comes to $275.88, so Audition plus a perpetual RX 12 Standard license costs $674.88 in the first year. Education pricing halves RX: $49.50, $199.50 and $699.50\. Owners of RX 11 Standard pay $129 to move to RX 12 Standard, Elements owners pay $299 to step up to Standard, and going from RX 12 Standard to Advanced costs $999.

![Chart of what each RX 12 edition gives you in Audition: Elements has six repair plug-ins and no Audio Editor, RX Connect, Dialogue Isolate or Spectral Repair; Standard has all of those; Advanced adds an HQ offline mode for Dialogue Isolate and reaches De-wind, Dialogue Contour and Ambience Match via RX Connect only](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/10/rx-editions-inside-audition.webp)

Elements stops at six plug-ins; RX Connect and the Audio Editor start at Standard; De-wind, Dialogue Contour and Ambience Match need Advanced and the Connect round trip.

Both products have free trials, and the rules differ. Audition's trial lasts 7 days, billing starts on day 8, and you then have 14 days to cancel for a full refund. Adobe allows one trial per person, and it converts to a paid plan unless you cancel. RX gives you a 10-day trial, after which demo limits apply. During the trial the RX plug-ins run with full functionality, but the standalone RX application cannot save or export, per [iZotope's guide to demoing its software](https://support.izotope.com/hc/en-us/articles/47669616688781-How-to-Demo-iZotope-Software). iZotope does not say whether an RX Connect Send Back counts as an export in trial mode, so try the round trip on a throwaway clip before you count on it.

iZotope Plus and Pro start with a 7-day free trial. They work offline but need a Native Access check-in once a month, and if you cancel, the tools turn read-only once the subscription expires. iZotope says perpetual licenses will remain available alongside the subscriptions. ## Which one to get

- **You edit video in Premiere Pro.** Start with Audition and the Essential Sound Dialogue repair options, and send clips across with Edit Clip In Adobe Audition. Add RX 12 Standard when traffic or crowd noise sits under the words, the case where the published comparisons favored RX.
- **You produce a podcast.** Audition, plus RX 12 Elements at $99 if you keep fixing clicks, clipping, hum or room reverb. Elements runs as plug-ins inside Audition, so nothing leaves the session.
- **You restore dialogue for a living.** RX 12 Standard at minimum, for the Audio Editor, Spectral Repair and RX Connect. Move to Advanced only if you need De-wind, De-rustle, Dialogue Contour or Ambience Match.
- **You already own one.** If you own Audition, add RX rather than switch. If you own RX Standard, you still need somewhere to edit and mix, and Audition is a natural partner because of RX Connect.
- **Your interview has wind and clipping.** In Audition, try Adaptive Noise Reduction for the wind and the DeClipper with Adobe's Gain 0 plus Hard Limiting method. In RX, De-clip is in every edition, but De-wind needs Advanced, and the Creative COW order of light Dialogue Isolate, Voice De-noise, then De-wind is the one I would copy.
- **Your budget is tight.** Run both trials on your worst file: 7 days of Audition, 10 days of RX. If Audition's effects fix it, you are done.

Start from the problem, not the product: steady noise stays in Audition, noise inside the words goes to RX.

## Questions about RX and Audition

### Can Audition replace RX?

For steady hiss, hum, clicks and light clipping, often yes. Audition's Noise Reduction, DeHummer, click removers and DeClipper cover those jobs. For noise inside the words, single sounds in the middle of a sentence, wind on top of other noise and dialogue matching, the published comparisons favor RX, and Audition has no equivalent of Ambience Match or Dialogue Contour among its documented restoration effects.

### Does RX work in Audition?

Yes. iZotope lists Audition 2026 as a supported RX 12 host. RX plug-ins load as VST3, and RX Connect, included with RX Standard and Advanced, works in Audition only as a VST3 plug-in. If it is missing, run Scan for Plug-ins in Audition's Audio Plug-in Manager.

### Is RX Elements enough with Audition?

For podcast cleanup it can be. Elements adds De-click, De-clip, De-hum, De-reverb, Repair Assistant and Voice De-noise as plug-ins. It has no Audio Editor, no RX Connect, no Dialogue Isolate and no Spectral Repair, so if noise sits inside the speech, RX 12 Standard is the edition to buy.
