- Description: ntdll.dll is where Windows caught the crash, not what caused it. The order that got ACID Pro 11 running again in published crash threads: both Visual C++ v14 runtimes, then plug-ins, audio or graphics drivers, then a crash dump for Boris FX support.

**ntdll.dll isn't the broken part of an ACID Pro 11 crash; it's the Windows file where the crash surfaced. Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ v14 redistributable in both versions, x86 and x64, restart Windows and open ACID again.** That fix got ACID Pro 11 running for 5 of 6 affected users in [the pinned ACID thread on magix.info](https://www.magix.info/us/forum/ntdll-dll-acid-doesn-t-start--1351493/). Don't download ntdll.dll from a DLL site, and don't start with a reinstall: it stopped none of the six crashes where people tried it.

My rule is simple: runtimes first, everything else second. Across seven published crash threads, six of them for ACID and its sibling VEGAS Pro, the Visual C++ install was the reported fix for 10 of 13 affected users, while reinstalling the program and running Windows' file checkers fixed nobody. So I'd install the two packages before pulling plug-ins, audio drivers or graphics drivers apart. When ACID dies at a specific moment, such as the plug-in scan or the first second of playback, the table further down sends you to the matching fix.

## What the ntdll.dll crash message tells you

The file name is the least useful part of the message. The ACID Pro 11 crash in the pinned thread reads Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005), Fault Module ntdll.dll, Fault Offset 0x1C1FE, from version 11.0.2 (Build 21). Each field says something different:

- **Fault module ntdll.dll.** [Microsoft's crash troubleshooting guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/performance/troubleshoot-application-service-crashing-behavior) says Windows often names ntdll.dll, kernel32.dll or kernelbase.dll as the faulting module because these heavily used files get caught as victims of corruption that a misbehaving module caused earlier. ntdll.dll is where the damage was noticed, not where it started.
- **Exception code 0xc0000005.** In [Microsoft's NTSTATUS reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows%5Fprotocols/ms-erref/596a1078-e883-4972-9bbc-49e60bebca55) that code is STATUS\_ACCESS\_VIOLATION: an instruction referenced memory it could not read or write.
- **Fault offset 0x1C1FE.** VEGAS Pro 17 and VEGAS Pro 23 crashed with the same exception, the same module and the identical offset in [a Microsoft Q&A thread](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5706995/an-issue-with-system32ntdll-dll-is-preventing-sony). That match is the strongest hint that ACID and VEGAS are failing for the same reason.

Windows records the same crash as Event ID 1000, source Application Error, in the Application log, with the faulting application name, faulting module name, exception code and fault offset. Type `perfmon /rel` into the Start menu search to open [Reliability Monitor](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/perfmon) and reach that record quickly. [Our Sound Forge startup crash guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-wont-open-crashes-startup/) walks through Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor step by step, and the same screens work for ACID.

Read the faulting module line before anything else. When it names a plug-in DLL or another ACID file instead of ntdll.dll, that component is your suspect, and the [plug-in fix](#plugin-scan) comes first.

![Event ID 1000 Application Error fields for an ACID Pro crash: faulting module ntdll.dll, exception code 0xc0000005 and fault offset 0x1C1FE, with callouts explaining each field and the matching VEGAS offset](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/10/acid-ntdll-crash-fields.webp)

Look past the file name: ntdll.dll is where Windows caught the crash, and the offset matches the VEGAS crashes that the same runtime fix cured.

## Match the fix to the moment ACID crashes

"ACID keeps crashing" covers several failures with different causes. Pin down the moment, run the Visual C++ fix if you haven't, then go to the matching section.

Start with the runtimes, then follow the branch that matches when ACID dies.

## Fix 1: Install the latest Visual C++ v14, x86 and x64

This is the fix with the best record, and for a crash right after the window appears it's often the only one you need. It takes four steps:

1. Open [Microsoft's latest supported Visual C++ downloads](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist) and download both packages, vc\_redist.x86.exe and vc\_redist.x64.exe. Use Microsoft's page only, never a mirror.
2. Run both installers. Nothing needs uninstalling first; if an installer offers Repair, let it repair.
3. Restart Windows.
4. Open ACID.

Install both even if one looks present already. The threads where this worked installed both, and the asker in the Microsoft Q&A thread could repair the x86 package but found the x64 one missing entirely; installing it brought VEGAS back. Microsoft notes that a package's architecture has to match the app's, and installing both removes the guesswork. In that thread the moderator-recommended answer fixed 3 of 4 affected users, and in the magix.info thread 5 of 6, which is why a moderator pinned it on April 8, 2026 as a solution for most users.

![Both Microsoft Visual C++ v14 installers, vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe, marked as required, followed by Restart Windows and Open ACID](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/4b/af4b05d4-2e0b-4edc-8378-1e2a62fecc70/content/images/2026/10/vcpp-both-architectures.webp)

Install both packages; in one documented case the x64 runtime was simply missing.

The likely reason a Microsoft runtime can take down ACID comes from VEGAS. In late 2025, VEGAS staff traced a wave of VEGAS crashes right after loading to the Visual C++ 14.50 runtime and named vcomp140.dll version 14.50.35503.0 as the affected file. [A Boris FX forum moderator later summed it up](https://forum.borisfx.com/t/all-versions-of-vegas-stopped-opening/22838): early builds of the recent Visual C++ runtime had a bug that broke numerous programs, VEGAS included; Microsoft fixed it quickly, but some developers had already bundled the problem builds with their software. ACID and VEGAS once shared a codebase, as a forum helper points out, and ACID fails with the same signature at the same offset, broke in the same period and comes back with the same install, so the same runtime problem is the most likely cause. Neither MAGIX nor Boris FX has confirmed that for ACID, and the Boris FX help center has no ntdll.dll article at all. Microsoft's own redistributable page also tells anyone fixing an app with a runtime update to check with the app's vendor. It's a community-proven fix, not a documented vendor procedure, and still the one that worked most often.

Two conditions apply. The current v14 package supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 only. Older runtimes, Visual C++ 2013 and earlier, install side by side with it, so leave them alone; a forum helper says ACID Pro 10 needed the 2013 runtimes, and removing them could break an older ACID you still use. While the machine restarts anyway, let Windows Update finish too, since Microsoft's crash checklist starts with current Windows updates, an up-to-date application and antivirus exclusions.

## Fix 2: Find the plug-in that crashes the scan

When ACID gets past the splash and dies during the plug-in scan, or the moment one effect or soft synth loads, a single plug-in is the likely cause. Keep it out of ACID until its maker updates it.

If ACID opens, use the Plug-In Manager. [ACID's help for the current release](https://cdn.borisfx.com/borisfx/Documentation/acid/2026/en/content/plug-in%5Fmanager%5Fwindow.htm) describes a Failed folder for plug-ins that didn't scan correctly or timed out; they can't be used, and a right-click offers Rescan. To keep a plug-in out without uninstalling it, right-click it and choose Ignore, or drag it into the Ignored folder. Soft synths have their own Failed and Ignored folders.

When ACID won't open at all, work outside it. Move one suspect plug-in, the newest or the most recently updated, out of the folder ACID scans, then start ACID again. That is how [a Cubase user on Steinberg's forum](https://forums.steinberg.net/t/getting-alot-of-these-ntdll-dll-errors/882399) stopped a startup crash that named ntdll.dll: removing Kontakt 7.vst3 from the scanned VST3 folder ended it, after Steinberg support had asked for the crash dump. Move plug-ins one at a time so you know which one it was. The [VST folder paths in our plug-ins-not-showing guide](https://soundforgepro.com/sound-forge-pro-vst-plugins-not-showing/) show where they usually live.

Plug-ins that came in older MAGIX bundles are licensed separately. Boris FX says [their compatibility depends on the plug-in and its version](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44650836609549-Will-third-party-plug-ins-from-MAGIX-bundles-continue-to-work) and sends problems with them to the plug-in's maker. When the plug-in that crashes is iZotope RX, [our RX crash guide](https://soundforgepro.com/izotope-rx-keeps-crashing-wont-open/) covers its own scan and launch fixes.

## Fix 3: Rule out the audio driver

Run the Visual C++ fix first even when the crash started the day a new interface arrived. A magix.info user whose ACID Pro 11 crashed on Windows 11 after connecting a new USB audio interface got it running again by updating to the latest v14 runtime, not by touching the audio driver.

Should ACID still die when audio starts, switch the device type to Microsoft Sound Mapper, the default. [ACID's audio device help](https://cdn.borisfx.com/borisfx/Documentation/acid/2026/en/content/preferences%5F-%5Faudio%5Fdevice.htm) places that choice on the Audio Device tab of Preferences, next to Direct Sound Surround Mapper, Windows Classic Wave Driver, ASIO and ReWire Device Driver. When the crash comes before you can reach Preferences, disconnect the new interface and start ACID again.

A stable ACID on Sound Mapper points at the ASIO driver. I'd update that driver from the interface maker and keep only one ASIO device in play, because [ACID's troubleshooting help](https://cdn.borisfx.com/borisfx/Documentation/acid/2026/en/content/troubleshooting.htm) says ACID can use one ASIO driver at a time and that some ASIO drivers conflict with other driver models such as WDM and wave drivers. Dropouts are a separate problem from a crash: for those, the same page suggests raising the ASIO latency, starting at 2048 samples, and the [audio latency calculator](https://soundforgepro.com/audio-latency-calculator/) turns that buffer into milliseconds.

## Fix 4: If it started after a graphics driver update

Install the Visual C++ packages here too, then clean-install a graphics driver, and know that this branch has no proven fix for ACID yet. Two of the 13 affected users in the Visual C++ threads tied the crash to a recent Intel driver update. In [a Boris FX forum VEGAS thread](https://forum.borisfx.com/t/vegas-will-not-boot-on-my-system-neither-pro-19-nor-pro-23/22152), the latest x64 Visual C++ package fixed it anyway. In the pinned ACID thread, one user rolled the driver back, clean-reinstalled ACID and reinstalled every Visual C++ package, and the thread ends with ACID still crashing.

Open Event ID 1000 again. If the faulting module is a graphics driver file rather than ntdll.dll, the driver becomes the stronger suspect: [Boris FX's VEGAS article on amfrt64.dll](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/43403778690701-How-do-I-fix-errors-referencing-fault-module-amfrt64-dll) treats that AMD module as a graphics driver problem and starts with a driver update. I'd take the current driver, or the one before it, straight from Intel, NVIDIA or AMD and do a clean install. Skip driver-updater utilities, and don't expect a rollback alone to help: it failed for both users who reported trying one.

## When ACID "crashes" on stop, seek or render

Wait before you force-quit. ACID's troubleshooting help warns that excessively high VSTi buffer values cause latency that "can appear as an application crash", and its example is a 1000-second hang on every stop, seek or render. Those values sit in ACID's internal settings, which the help documents for the current release only. If you or a tweak guide changed them in ACID 11, ask Boris FX support where that version keeps them rather than guessing at the registry.

Whatever the cause, autosave limits the damage. [ACID's general preferences](https://cdn.borisfx.com/borisfx/Documentation/acid/2026/en/content/general%5Fpreferences.htm) describe a temporary project file written every five minutes without overwriting the original; after a crash, the restored copy is saved as a \*.restored.acd file. Open it and save it under a new name before you try any of the fixes above.

## What not to do

- **Don't download ntdll.dll, or any DLL, from a website.** It's a protected Windows system file, and the one user in the Microsoft Q&A thread who downloaded it gained nothing; VEGAS ran again only after the Visual C++ install. If Windows' own copy were damaged, Microsoft's repair tools would restore it from the system's cached copy.
- **Don't reinstall ACID as a first step.** Reinstalling ACID or VEGAS stopped the crash in none of 6 reported attempts.
- **SFC and DISM won't fix ACID either.** System File Checker or DISM was tried in 4 reported cases and fixed none. Running [Microsoft's DISM and sfc /scannow repair](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files-79aa86cb-ca52-166a-92a3-966e85d4094e) is still sensible when Windows itself misbehaves.
- **Skip registry cleaners, all-in-one fixer tools and registry-deletion tips.** None of them appears among the fixes that worked, and each one changes more than the crash requires.
- **Keep the ACID 11 installer source in mind.** If you ever need a clean reinstall, [installers for the pre-2026 versions remain hosted by MAGIX](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44650730285709-Where-can-I-access-my-existing-product-downloads).

## Test results: what seven crash threads show

No crash-rate measurements exist for ACID Pro 11, so the test results here count outcomes in seven readable crash threads on four independent forums, from November 2023 to August 2026: two ACID Pro threads, four VEGAS Pro threads with the same ntdll.dll access violation, and one Cubase thread for the plug-in-scan pattern.

Five of the seven ACID users got ACID running again. The two left were the Intel-driver case and [a Boris FX forum user](https://forum.borisfx.com/t/acid-pro-crashes/25000) whose ACID Pro 10, ACID Pro 11 and ACID Pro 2026 trial all crashed after Windows updates, and in whose thread Visual C++ never came up. This is a small, self-selected sample, so the counts show patterns, not rates. The pattern is still clear enough to set the order: runtimes first, then the fix for the moment ACID crashes, and a reinstall only at the end, if ever.

## Still crashing? Get a crash dump and contact the right people

Save a crash dump, then open a ticket with Boris FX, which [now provides technical support for ACID](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44650769643277-Who-provides-technical-support-going-forward). A dump shows support what ACID was doing when it failed, which a screenshot of the dialog can't.

Windows Error Reporting can save full dumps for one program. This is a registry edit, so back up the registry first:

1. In Registry Editor, go to HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Windows Error Reporting\\LocalDumps and create a key named after ACID's program file, the .exe name shown as the faulting application in Event ID 1000.
2. Inside it, add DumpFolder as an expandable string value (where dumps go), plus two DWORD values: DumpCount (how many to keep) and DumpType set to 2 for a full dump.
3. Start ACID until it crashes, then attach the dump to your support ticket.
4. Delete the key afterwards, as Microsoft's crash guidance advises.

- **Patches:** fixes for ACID Pro 11 would have to come from MAGIX; Boris FX says its [development is focused on the new versions](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44650811315853-Will-there-continue-to-be-free-patches-or-bug-fixes-for-older-versions).
- **License:** a [lifetime ACID license bought from MAGIX remains valid](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/44650605900301-What-happens-to-my-existing-lifetime-license-purchased-from-MAGIX) under MAGIX.
- **Subscription:** ACID Pro 11 subscriptions bought through MAGIX are being moved to ACID Pro 2026 by Boris FX.

Upgrading to ACID Pro 2026 is an option, not a guaranteed fix. Its [system requirements](https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/acid-pro/system-requirements/) list Windows 11 only, and the Boris FX forum user above saw the 2026 trial crash the same way as ACID 10 and 11\. According to [the ACID Pro product page](https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/acid-pro/), owners who bought ACID Pro 11 from MAGIX on or after January 1, 2026 get the upgrade free by emailing sales@borisfx.com with proof of purchase; earlier buyers choose Upgrade in the Boris FX store, sign in with the email used at MAGIX and select their ACID Pro 11 serial. I'd run the 2026 trial on the affected machine before paying anything. [Our ACID Pro 2026 review](https://soundforgepro.com/acid-pro-review/) covers what changed since 11 and what it costs, and ACID now sits in the same family as Sound Forge, Samplitude and Sequoia, which the [Boris FX audio hub](https://soundforgepro.com/boris-fx-audio/) maps out.

My verdict: install both Visual C++ runtimes and restart before you touch anything else, then follow the moment ACID crashes. That order matches what got people's ACID running again, and it leaves your projects, plug-ins and license untouched while you work through it.

## FAQ

### Is ntdll.dll a virus, or should I replace it?

The genuine ntdll.dll is a core Windows file, and Microsoft explains that it often shows up as the faulting module because it gets caught in damage done by another module. Replacing it from a website won't help. If Windows' copy were damaged, DISM and sfc /scannow would restore it from Windows' own cached copy.

### Does ACID Pro 11 work on Windows 10?

Yes. [ACID Pro 11 launched for Windows 10 and Windows 11](https://www.gearnews.com/magix-acid-pro-11-loop-based-music-production-on-a-new-level/), and the v14 runtime fix supports both. ACID Pro 2026 is different: its requirements list Windows 11 only.

### Can I run ACID on a Windows on ARM laptop?

Not with support. Boris FX [supports only Mocha Pro on Windows on ARM](https://support.borisfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/47736351463181-Regarding-Compatibility-with-Windows-on-ARM); its other products can be installed there but may not work properly, so a crash on an ARM laptop has no supported fix.
